English

The study of English is at the heart of education. Our aim in the Department is to get all pupils in the school to experience the enjoyment of reading, to understand the power of language and to use words effectively themselves. As part of our courses we take boys to the theatre and to external lectures, when appropriate, set up activities for younger boys such as the celebration of World Book Day and use DVD and IT resources.

Our examination results are excellent. At A Level we offer both English Language and English Literature and have rarely dropped below a 100% pass rate.  Many boys achieve high grades. Four boys have been placed in the top five marks in the past four years for GCSE Lit.

A most important part of the English Department’s work is extra-curricular. Members of the Department help boys with the production of literary magazines, run debating and discussion societies and sometimes help with Drama; in addition, we enter boys for external writing, debating and public-speaking competitions.
