The Oratory School has its own 25m indoor rifle range. This is a purpose built range adjacent to the main CCF Headquarters. Pupils use a mixture of MOD issue no 8 & Anschutz 0.22 rifles. The OSSC allows St Philip House pupils to shoot once a week and senior boys 3 evenings per week.
In addition to small bore, members of the Combined Cadet Force can shoot the Cadet GP L98 A1 (5.56) rifle at Bisley, Pirbright & Ash outdoor ranges. Shooting is normally over a distance of 200 & 300 metres at both ordinary and snap-shot targets. Boys are also given the chance to experience working in the ‘butts’ marking shots and repairing bullet holes. Trips to the outdoor ranges are Wednesday and Saturday afternoons. There is also further opportunity to shoot as part of the CCF who parade on Thursday afternoons.
The School is proud of its connection with the armed forces not only through the Head Master (a Royal Marine Commando) but through Old Oratorians, some currently serving in Afghanistan and Iraq.
CCF Cadets can attend various leadership training courses and should apply to their Contingent Commander Wing Commander M H Green, MBE or Senior Under Officer A W Coupland for details.
