St Philip House
(11+ Entry) Years 7 & 8
Welcome to the web page of St. Philip House. St. Philip House is named after our patron saint, Saint Philip Neri the founder of the Oratory movement. St. Philip House is the junior house of the Oratory Senior School catering for boys in years seven and eight. We are a small and homely house with the Housemaster, his deputy and their families, along with a tutor and housemother and two gap students looking after the pastoral needs of the boys. Class sizes are small, with great care being given to individual development with a learning support unit which gives support to boys of all abilities.
The house is well equipped with a small library and games room with pool table, table football and darts board. The house has its own tuck shop and the day room is appointed with DVD and video recorders. At 8-25am Morning roll call and prayers are included in a house assembly where the daily announcements are given.
Lessons start at 8-45am and continue through to 12-20am with a 20 minute break at 10-40am. Lunch is served at 12-20pm in an early sitting before the senior boys arrive.
Following games each afternoon there is a forty minute reading period where the boys can choose a book from our library or bring a novel in from home. If the boys have missed a prep session, due to, for example, a sporting or musical commitment, they are allowed with the permission of the member of staff supervising reading, to use the time to catch up on any work missed.
After reading there is one afternoon lesson at 3-40pm followed by tea at 4-20pm. The evening prep period follows at 5-00pm when all the boys’ academic work is completed for the day. Although the Winter and Summer timetable varies slightly in the afternoons, time of departure is always the same.
Our days boys are free to depart at 6-20pm though many will stay on for one or more days a week and participate in our programme of evening activities. Supper is at 6-20pm followed by music practice time in the Music Department which is next to the Refectory.
Evening activities take place between 7-00pm and 8-45pm after which the boys get changed for evening roll call and prayers at 9-00pm. The boarders are in bed by 9-15pm and lights out at 9-30pm.
