The HSBC World Rugby Sevens series is the premier competition in the Sevens calendar. It consists of 10 tournaments held around the world, in which national teams compete for points in each round. There are 15 ‘core’ teams who participate at each round of the series. The 16th team is an invitational one. The league started in November 2018 in Dubai, the Twickenham leg is the penultimate round, with the final round in Paris in June, when the overall Champions are crowned.
The Oratory boys have always enjoyed playing 7s, and had considerable success in doing so. A group of 20 Old Oratorians was present at the Twickenham leg of the World Series and joined over 86,000 spectators sharing the experience of watching the world’s best 7s teams in action in glorious sunshine
The backdrop to these games is best described as ‘Carnival’ - with most of the spectators in fancy dress and a DJ blaring music between each game. It was a long day with the first round of games starting at 9.30am and the final rounds at 6.00pm. The Fijians were the outstanding performers over the weekend and were the round 9 winners. They are favourites to take the overall league title.
