We were delighted to welcome Gemma Hatton and Oliver Swan on Wednesday 8 June, as they gave a 6th Form Loquitur talk on Engineering and Motorsport.
Gemma and Oliver discussed the highs and lows of their respective routes into engineering and motorsport and gave the 6th Form plenty of sage advice about perseverance and learning from failure.
Gemma Hatton studied Mechanical Engineering at Bath University and completed a 12 month work placement at Nissan, where she also worked for a GT race team. She then went on to study the Advanced Motorsport Engineering MSc at Cranfield University whilst data engineering for a BTCC team. At the age of 23, Gemma was working in the F1 pitlane as a trackside Tyre engineer for Pirelli and then Manor F1. In 2017, Gemma switched to technical writing and became Deputy Editor for Racecar Engineering Magazine. Now, she is the Director of her own technical writing company which specialises in providing technical content for a variety of engineering companies.
Oliver Swan is a Mechanical Design Engineer who has been working in the motorsport sector for five years. He is an Old Oratorian (OS: 2005-2012) and was House Captain of St John. After leaving The Oratory, Oliver attended Plymouth University, graduating with an honours degree in Mechanical Engineering. Oliver has worked for Prodrive Motorsport, where he was part of the design team for the Aston Martin Vantage GTE race car, which was the class winning car at Le Mans in 2017, and took multiple championships between 2016-2017. He currently works for Red Bull Advanced Technologies, the customer projects arm of Red Bull Racing.
