Celebrating the World Book Day 2019

To celebrate World Book Day on Thursday 7th March, The Oratory was delighted to welcome the renowned author, Michelle Magorian to speak to pupils. Boys in St Philip House were fortunate enough to listen to her lively talk Goodnight Mister Tom – Which version? in which she used extracts from the novel to show different ways of telling a story through the musical adaptation and television drama.

It was fascinating to hear how John Thaw finally accepted the role of Tom Oakley for television and Michelle even performed a song as Mrs Beech from the musical! Michelle shared anecdotes about her writing and where she found inspiration for other novels such as Cuckoo in the Nest and A Spoonful of Jam. There were many excellent questions asked by our boys in the Q&A session and Michelle imparted lots of tips for future authors, screenwriters and directors in the audience.
