11 January 2019
I hope that 2019 will be a very happy and fulfilling year for you. As you know, yesterday was the Feast of the Epiphany. As well as its religious meaning of “the manifestation of Our Lord” you may not know that the word “epiphany” has a secondary, secular meaning as well: a sudden moment of revelation or realisation. I suppose the symbol of the star might be helpful here: just as the Wise Men could see the way to Jesus with utter clarity as a result of the star’s brightness, when we experience an epiphany things become clear to us and we see things as they really are with almost blinding truth. We are all on a journey, one in which we are trying to work out who we are and why we are here. We also live in interesting, challenging and often extremely confusing times. My prayer for all of us for 2019 is that we may each experience our own epiphany and understand ourselves, the world and our place in it with truth and clarity. Happy New Year.
