St John

St. John House was built in 1975 and named after the former Head Master, Father Ambrose St. John (1862-72).  Ambrose St John was a good friend of Cardinal Newman’s and was regarded, along with the ‘’Dame’’ (matron) Mrs. Frances Wootten, as the guiding force that made the school successful.

This is my first year as Housemaster of St John having arrived at the Oratory from New Zealand in August with my wife Zoe, three children Harrison, Charlie and Amelie and our new addition, Bella the dog. The environment I hope to create within the house should resemble an ideal home; safe, supportive, encouraging, guiding, motivating and an enjoyable place to be. St John House is staffed by a superb pastoral team who make every effort to support my vision. The Housemother, Mrs. Harper is a key figure in creating this home from home and her door is always open for boys to chat with her.

St. John is the home for around 45 boys, of which around 35% are day boys. The accommodation from 4th form onwards consists of single and twin rooms with only one dorm room of five beds allocated to 3rd form. Each boy is allocated a room within the house and is encouraged to participate in house events. This combination allied with the spacious and comfortable common room areas ensures that there is great integration between boarders and day students. St. John is a lively, friendly house and its doors are open to all students. Our common rooms are often filled with students from other houses enjoying our hospitality and facilities!

We are immensely proud of our sporting and academic achievements. St John boys are regularly leaders whether it be in the classroom, on the stage, in the orchestra or choir, or on the sports pitches. Every St. John boy is encouraged to reach his potential in a supportive and safe environment where no one individual is valued more than the next boy. I am proud of our recent sporting success in the Rose Bowl house competition will be driving our boys equally as hard in the cultural and musical aspects.

St John House, like The Oratory, is a vibrant, friendly, family orientated unit. Please feel free to see us for yourself. I am always happy to meet potential parents and look forward to your interest in St. John House.
