Carton de Wiart Society

To commemorate the centenary of the CCF’s foundation as the OTC in 1913, the school set up a new Society for military Old Oratorians to meet regularly  for a formal dinner at the OS and to give support to The Oratory School CCF today.

Sir Adrian Carton de Wiart VC KBE CB CMG DSO (OS 1891-98) was the most decorated, and the most injured Old Oratorian to have served in the British Armed Forces. His extraordinary military career spanned fifty years, from the South African Wars of the late Victorian age, when he served as Trooper Carton in Paget’s Horse, to his escape from an Italian POW camp in 1943. He ended WWII as Churchill’s emissary to Chiang-Kai Shek.

The first Carton de Wiart Society dinner was held in April 2013 at the School. The President of the Society is Matthew Stilwell (OS 1970-74). Any Old Oratorians with military connections who would like to belong to the Society should email the Society Office or speak to a member of the OSS Committee.

There is a Carton de Wiart Society tie which retails for £10 and is available from the OSS office. Members can also purchase Carton de Wiart’s memoirs “Happy Odyssey” from the OSS office.
