Pope Francis has appointed Bishop Robert Byrne…

5 February 2019

On Monday we heard the happy news that the Holy Father has appointed our great friend Bishop Robert Byrne as bishop of Hexham and Newcastle.

Bishop Robert was for many years the Provost of the Oxford Oratory and a governor of the Oratory Schools. Recently he became one of the vice-presidents of the Association.

Five years ago he became the first Oratorian bishop in England in nearly a century and a half. We have continued to see a lot of him as an auxiliary bishop in this diocese and he has confirmed the last five generations of Oratory boys at the OS.

We will miss him greatly but we assure him of our prayers for his new ministry in the north east – the country of St Aidan, St Bede, St Cuthbert and many of the great English saints.
