On Sunday 19 May our great friend the Rt Revd Robert Byrne visited the school to celebrate the sacrament of Confirmation. Bishop Robert has known the school for many decades, not least serving as a governor throughout his years at the Oxford Oratory and then as an auxiliary bishop in Birmingham. On the feast of the Annunciation this year he was enthroned in the cathedral in Newcastle where the Pope has appointed him Bishop of Hexham and Newcastle. We were overjoyed to see him. It was a very long way to come and he had to catch a train soon after Mass to return to his diocese.
Fifteen candidates from school and one from our local parish church received the sacrament, a once-in-a-lifetime moment. They stood up and renewed the vows which for most had been made by their parents and Godparents when they were very small. The bishop then prayed for the descent of the Holy Spirit and sealed them with the Oil of Chrism which he had consecrated in Holy Week.
It was the happiest of days. The sacristans and Schola Cantorum enriched our worship as ever and a large congregation poured out of the very warm chapel to enjoy the summer sunshine and celebrate with the newly confirmed. We wish them many happy years ahead.
