The Oratory School Consort, one of the school’s choral groups, has recently returned from a highly successful tour of Hong Kong and Macau. A busy schedule of services, recitals and sightseeing was put together, exposing our pupils to the wide cultural diversity of this part of the world. We were invited to sing Mass at St John’s Cathedral on 25th March, the feast of the Annunciation. This gave us an opportunity to give the international premiere of Matthew Martin’s Oratory Mass, which was commissioned by the School in September 2016. There are strong links to The Oratory School in this part of the world and many former pupils and friends were with us during the tour, including at a reception for an ever-growing and active group of Old Oratorians. Father Peter Stilwell, himself an Old Oratorian, is Rector of Macau University and extended an invitation to the choir to sing for Sunday morning Mass in Macau Cathedral which was broadcast live on local television. In addition, we gave a recital at La Salle College, which was followed by a masterclass and lunch with their school choirs, living proof of the power of music to bring people together, however diverse their backgrounds. The tour was rounded off with a highly-charged performance by the Consort at a lunchtime recital in St John’s Cathedral, followed by an end-of-tour reception at the Asia Society.
