Racket Sports

With the developments of the new sports centre, it is a really exciting time to be a racket player. The School has on offer several racket sports to try.

Real Tennis

The Oratory Real Tennis Court was built in l989 and over the last twenty years the School has developed a string of players who continue to compete in national and international competitions. Most boys have never played the game prior to arriving at The Oratory and so all the new boys have an introductory lesson in the Michaelmas Term. The boys get use of the court most evenings, with coaching on Thursday evenings and during lunch breaks. Extra coaching is available. Away from the boys, the school operates a successful outside membership as well hosting exhibition matches during the year. The highlight for the school was in 2006 when we hosted the World Championships.

A brief history of Real Tennis

Real tennis is the original racquet sport from which the modern game of lawn tennis, or tennis, is descended. Real tennis is still played at a small number of active courts in the United Kingdom, Australia, the United States and France.

It is also known as:

  • “court tennis” (America)
  • jeu de paume (France)
  • and formerly called “royal tennis” (Australia).

The term real tennis is often thought to be a corruption of this last name and related to the game’s connection with royalty during its heyday in England and France in the 16th and 17th centuries. In fact “real” was first used at the end of the 19th century as a retronym to distinguish it from the then recently invented game of lawn tennis. Real tennis players often just call it “tennis,” describing the modern game as “lawn tennis.”

Squash

All 3 squash courts are part of the sports centre development due to be completed in the autumn. This has affected team training, however, the boys have continued to play matches and the interest from all ages is certainly growing. Inter school matches takes place in the Michaelmas and Lent terms and we run a 1stV and an U15V squad. The courts are also available for the boys in the evenings and at weekends and generally they are very well used.

Badminton

Badminton is predominately played within the inter house programme throughout the year with the occasional school match at seniors and Junior Colts level.  It is a popular sport and we look forward with increasing the fixture list once the sports centre development is completed.
