Head of Oratory Racquets, Claire Fahey, wins Australian Real Tennis Open Ladies' singles and doubles titles

Claire Fahey, Head of Racquets at The Oratory School, has started the year in impressive style as her dominance of ladies' Real Tennis shows no signs of slowing down.

The reigning Ladies' champion retained both the Australian Open Ladies' singles and doubles titles at the Royal Melbourne Tennis Club. Fahey eased through the singles draw but saved her best performance for Monday's showpiece final against World Number 2, Lea Van Der Zwalmen. Fahey produced some of her best tennis in an opening set that saw her lose only 5 points as she closed the set out 6/0. The French challenger showed signs of improvement in the second set but could not cope with the World Champion’s precision or power. Despite Van Der Zwalmen having some chances, Fahey proved too strong as she closed the match out with another 6/0 set. Victory in Melbourne was Fahey's 11th triumph at the Australian Open having first won the tournament in 2010. It marked Fahey's 49th major open singles title to go alongside her 8 World Championship victories.

The doubles competition followed a similar pattern. Fahey partnered with World Number 4, Saskia Bollerman to defend the title they had won together in 2025. The pair progressed through to Tuesday's Final against Van Der Zwalmen and her partner, Katherine Carney. Carney herself a product of British junior Real Tennis is the current Girls' Junior World Champion and learnt much of her tennis at The Oratory under Fahey and Holyport Tennis Club. In a more competitive final, Fahey and Bollerman secured victory 6/3 6/2 as the pair played with great maturity and showcased their doubles experience. Speaking after the tournament, Fahey said: "This has been an excellent start to 2026 and credit to all the players in Melbourne and the club for putting on such a good event. It was great to play in front of some big crowds and produce some of my best tennis. I am feeling optimistic that my good form can continue through the year.

The Oratory is proud of its Racquets programme led by Claire Fahey, and looks forward to strengthening its racquets provision with Padel Courts due this summer.
