Claire Fahey, Head of Oratory Racquets, retains Real Tennis British Open Titles

It's been another successful week for The Oratory on the Real Tennis court with Claire Fahey, Head of Oratory Racquets, continuing her hold over the women’s game with victory in both the ladies’ singles and doubles competitions at the Real Tennis British Open.

It marked Fahey’s 14th British Open title to go alongside her eight World Championship successes and her 48th major open victory!

Fahey was in dominant mood throughout the week as she progressed to Saturday’s showpiece final without dropping a single game. The final, against her doubles partner Tara Lumley, followed a similar pattern. Fahey’s tight serving and impressive returning game was too much for her spirited opponent as she claimed the title with another 6/0 6/0 win.

It was a particularly special week for Fahey with the women’s draws being integrated alongside the men’s for the first time, and the first time the women’s competition has been back at the prestigious Queen’s Club since 1989. The competition marked a landmark change as Fahey continues to raise the bar for the women’s game. She had reached the last 16 of the open men’s competition earlier in the week.

On the doubles court, Fahey and Lumley, the defending champions, showed no signs of relinquishing their crown as they raced through to claim the title 6/1 6/1 against Jess Garside and Georgie Willis. "It was a fantastic tournament and great to be playing at Queen's," said Claire Fahey, "it is a big step forward for women's real tennis and I'm sure it will continue to grow."

The Oratory is one of only 4 schools in the country to have a Real Tennis court. Real Tennis, often referred to as the original racquet sport, is played on asymmetrical indoor courts with uniquely sloped surfaces and complex angles. Its rich heritage dates back centuries, but Fahey’s sustained success is helping to raise its profile among newer audiences, particularly women and younger players. This academic year, The Oratory’s racquets provision will be further enhanced with the introduction of Padel Courts.
