Loquitur Talk by Dominic Mayhew from Exeter University

Loquitur this week was delivered by Dominic Mayhew from Exeter University.

Some of our students met Dominic at the Surrey Degree Fair last month and gave him a warm welcome to The Oratory on Tuesday night. Dominic spoke to those holding offers from Exeter, and to those who aspire to gain an offer next year. He was highly informative, telling students about the different campuses, facilities, lectures, degree subjects, and methods of teaching – a problem-based approach presenting students with questions, investigation and challenge.

Dominic also talked about how Exeter is a degree apprenticeship provider, and went on to describe some of the less well-known courses with practical applications, and their new ‘minors’ programme of vocational skills courses. He was keen to stress that Exeter graduates do well in the job market.

Students learnt about the provision Exeter University makes for those with additional needs, as well as their bursaries, sports scholarship, and academic scholarship programmes. They received tips on how to attain reduced grade offers; some were delighted to hear that good grades in their EPQ will reduce their overall grade offer for their degree course!

Dr Moses, Assistant Head (6th Form) says, "We are very grateful to Dominic for visiting us he at The Oratory. We look forward to seeing him again in the new academic year when he will talk about changes to finance arrangements for students, and give advice on how best to manage finances in Higher Education."

All Oratory 6th Form pupils benefit from the comprehensive Loquitur Programme, which, through weekly workshops, talks, practical exercises and training, covers subjects such as critical thinking, leadership training, life skills and careers.
