Claire Fahey, Oratory Head of Racquets, becomes first woman to hold both the Ladies’ Real Tennis and Ladies’ Rackets World Championship Titles

Congratulations to Claire Fahey, Oratory Head of Racquets, who made sporting history this weekend by winning the Ladies’ Rackets World Championship at the prestigious The Queen’s Club with victory over Cesca Sweet in straight sets.

In capturing the title, Claire becomes the first woman ever to hold both the Ladies’ Real Tennis and Ladies’ Rackets World Championships, securing her place as one of the most accomplished players in the history of racquet sports. The achievement mirrors a feat previously accomplished in the men’s game by Peter Latham between 1895-1902, and Howard Angus, who held the titles separately in the 1970s.

Having dominated the world of Real Tennis since 2009, Claire set herself the ambitious goal of becoming a dual world champion three years ago. Following intense preparation, and balancing elite competition across two demanding sports, she has now achieved that remarkable feat. Speaking after the match, Claire said, “I couldn’t be happier. I have spent a lot of time training and having to adapt my preparation whilst still playing top-level Real Tennis. It has been a very demanding period, but it was definitely worth it. Thank you to everyone who supported me along the way.”

Everyone at The Oratory congratulates Claire on this extraordinary achievement and looks forward to seeing what she accomplishes next!

The Oratory is one of only 4 schools in the country to have a Real Tennis court. Real Tennis, often referred to as the original racquet sport, is played on asymmetrical indoor courts with uniquely sloped surfaces and complex angles.
