Old Oratorians receive DofE Gold Award at Buckingham Palace

On Friday 10 May, Old Oratorians Fraser Robertson, Grace Lambourne, Henry Watson, Joseph Gosling, Max Briffett and Nathan Hicks gathered at Buckingham Palace to receive their Duke of Edinburgh’s Gold Awards, which they earnt during their time at The Oratory School.

The ceremony at Buckingham Palace was the first of four events for gold award winners and their guests, which saw more than 8,000 young people celebrated in the palace gardens over the course of two days.

Joseph Gosling says “participating in the Gold Duke of Edinburgh’s Award has been a transformative experience, challenging me to develop new skills and push my limits. Meeting the Duke of Edinburgh at Buckingham Palace was an unforgettable honour, highlighting the incredible journey and personal growth I have benefited from through this prestigious programme.”

Grace Lambourne says, “It was a great honour to go to Buckingham Palace to receive my Gold DofE Award. I would recommend undertaking Gold Award to anyone thinking about this challenge. I have made so many memories and have experienced some amazing opportunities. DofE challenges one’s mental and physical strength and is such a rewarding journey. You won’t regret it!”

To achieve a gold Duke of Edinburgh (DofE) award, participants must complete 12 months of volunteering, a four-day expedition, and various physical, skill-based and residential challenges.

Marcus Fec, Oratory Assistant Head Co-Curricular says, “Service to others is a core concept of The Oratory and the DofE Award enables our students to gain recognition for their contribution to the community. For this group, community service included supporting local primary pupils, visiting residents of Henley Manor Care Home and performing for the Woodcote Volunteers. Their  expedition section was completed under challenging weather conditions in the Brecon Beacons.  Faced with injury, illness, mist and rain and hungry midges, these students battled through and gained a real sense of achievement and camaraderie.”

The Duke of Edinburgh’s Award Scheme is just one of the many co-curricular activities on offer at The Oratory School, which aim to enrich students’ learning and provide fun, adventure and inspiration all year round.
