Economics & Business
Dynamic subjects which draw on current events.
Economics and Business at A Level provides a good basis for understanding the world; especially the world of work. These subjects complement all other A Level choices and, for many students at The Oratory, prove to be the subject that they choose to continue to study in higher education.
The BTEC Level 3 Extended Certificate in Business is being introduced from September 2025.
Economics & Business at The Oratory
Both A Levels explore a range of topics relevant to modern business management and society, including the business environment and ethical business behaviour, alongside the major study areas of Finance, Marketing, HR and Operations management. The subjects are taught using a variety of methods, enabling students to enhance their skills in decision-making and problem-solving.
The BTEC Level 3 Extended Certificate in Business is ideal for students looking for a more practical learning experience. It is designed to help students develop the commercial knowledge and skills needed to succeed in the world of business.
About
Both Business and Economics A Levels are very popular at The Oratory. There are around 80 students studying either Business or Economics in the 6th Form. All Business and Economics students follow the Edexcel specification.
Many of our students progress to Economics and Business related degree courses at both UK and international universities.
Economics
Economics is about making choices, particularly in allocating scarce resources amongst competing needs. In essence, Economics develops theories aimed at enhancing prosperity and well-being in society. The course equips students with critical thinking skills and analytical tools. These enable students to understand and address socio-economic issues, such as poverty, unemployment, inflation, income inequality, and environmental sustainability.
The course is split between microeconomics and macroeconomics and is studied via four broad themes. Theme 1 and Theme 3 introduce microeconomic theory, which is applied to the behaviour of consumers and firms. Theme 2 and Theme 4 introduce macroeconomic theory, which looks at the behaviour of governments and economies at both the national and global level.
We prefer that a student has achieved a sound grade in both Mathematics and English Language at GCSE level before embarking on the course.
This A Level requires solid but not advanced Mathematics skills (usually indicated by a 6 or above at GCSE) and also an ability to write factual material coherently and in detail.

Beyond the course: Many of our students progress to Economic and Business related degrees at UK and international universities. Economics instils a broad range of highly transferable skills, from learning to read data effectively, to avoiding ‘fake news’, to constructing a coherent argument based on potentially conflicting pieces of evidence. You will learn how to analyse complex situations and structure arguments in a focused and effective manner. Your thinking will become disciplined and sharp.
Business
A level Business introduces students to the fundamental principles of business management, enabling students to assess why a company like Zara became a multinational success at a time when other clothes retailers were disappearing from the high street. A Level Business students should be motivated, hardworking, have an inquisitive mind, and enjoy being able to link theories and ideas from the classroom to real life examples. No prior knowledge is required, just an interest in the subject.
The A Level syllabus content is divided into four themes. These cover the main functional areas of a business, which include: marketing, human resource management, operations management, finance and accounting, as well as business strategy and international business management.
